Ok, so let’s go. I recently bought a Guinea pig, and I love it. She is very happy and now I want a ferret! I went to the pet store and played with a ferret fine sand, I held him, and he crawled into my pocket, papa, and we have done for about two hours! I want to know some good benefits as cages, bedding, toys, bowls, etc. and some advice. When my father was in college, he had a ferret and he escaped, and we think he has eaten or crushed by a cat, but we do not know. Help? Assumptions (I’m old enough responsibility, I know it’s hard work, but I’m ready!)

here is a lot of things that should help, by the way you will need two ferrets not one, they love company of eatch other

Well, let me tell you that your dad’s ferret did not get eaten by a cat, maybe by a dog, but certainly not a cat. Also, you will need to be very careful to keep the ferret away from the guinea pig!!
When you get a ferret you should buy a very loud, high pitched squeaky toy to train the ferret with. The noise will drive the ferret crazy, it sounds like a crying baby ferret. So they tend to run towards the noise, even waking from a sleep. When they run towards the noise reward them with a treat (ferretone works great, baby ferrets don’t always like it right away). This way if they ever get loose outside you can go around squeaking the toy and maybe find your ferret.
Things to get:
Cage. I recommend a Ferret Nation cage (In the beginning you should cover ever inch of that cage with blankets, except for the litter box. When they are little I even put the food and water dish on the blanket- this is for litter training reasons)
TOYS (rice box is easy to make and fun http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae215/AlaskanFerret/banditheaddeepinricebox.jpg )
You can also go to a flooring store. They have long cardboard tubes they store their linonium in that ferrets love. The stores usually throw these away, so a free toy!
Here’s a list of toys http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuWQya.5TsdcyxF9cXUCjv_ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091019112121AAZG1Rt&show=7#profile-info-IXEia7APaa
Bedding should be blankets or old clothes. They love old sweaters, you could even wear it so they sleep in your scent, helps them feel more comfortable around you in the beginning.
Water bowl should be very heavy, I use a large ceramic dog bowl so they can’t tip it (only drag it around). Also have a water bottle back-up in case they manage to spill the water bowl.
Ferret food. Buy quality kibble or look into feeding them a whole prey diet.
Ferret Leash (optional) this lets you bring the ferret outside, so you can -follow him- around and let him explore the world.
Find a good ferret vet, one qualified in “exotic” pets.
Two ferrets are much more fun than one, and they really enjoy each others company, if you can afford it, I suggest getting two.
Good Luck, ferrets are lots of fun!
