I turned the water supply to my toilet bowl off, and the water disappeared?

So my toilet bowl was leaking so I turned the water supply off. The next day, there wa no water in the toilet bowl. (you know, the little amount water that always stays in the toilet bowl to prevent harmful gases entering the house).

There was no water, do you think this is safe thing to do? Turning off the water supply to my toilet. Is it safe?

  1. just one more thing....... says:

yes it’s safe…there is a j channel in y our toilet that keeps the gasses rom entering your house.

Why not just find the leak and repair it. There are only a few places it will leak.

    1. The wax seal at the base of the toilet.
    2. The rubber ring between the tank and the bowl
    3. The water supply at the wall or at the tank

Toilet leak repairs scare a lot of people but is fairly simple for a DIYer

Sounds to me like you DO have a problem. You *should* be able to turn the water off, but over a 24 hour period, you should also still have a full *bowl*. It doesn’t evaporate THAT fast. You have a leak somewhere in the bowl, or there is a venting problem that is causing a suction on the bowl water. Since you already know the purpose of the water seal, you can surmise that it is NOT a good thing to have an empty bowl, so turning off the water would not be recommended until after the leak or siphon is found and repaired. THEN you can turn it off if you wish, though I’m not sure why you would want to.

I agree with Alan, but one simple question. Did somebody flush the toilet while you had the water turned off? This could possibly empty the bowl.

You should be able to turn off the supply line FOREVER and the water in the bowl should never go away. Even with no water in the tank, the water in the bowl should remain. It sounds as if the bowl itself is cracked and leaking onto the floor under the bowl. Turning off the water is perfectly safe. Failing to fix the leak is a bad Idea.
