I just started my first bowling league a couple of weeks ago. I have been bowling straight on with house balls and shoes. I have recently decided to buy a nice ball, and purchase my own shoes. After much research on balls, I settled on the Brunswick Fury. Most review sites said this was a great ball to start hooking with, and it an advanced enough ball to keep in my bag as my game progresses. My question is this. How should I get it drilled? I know that I need a fingertip grip, but I’m unfamiliar with the verbiage. I don’t know what it means to have it drilled 5” from the pin (not sure if that is correct). I know I should go to the pro shop and talk to the pro. But what info should I be equipped with before I start asking questions to the house pro? Also, when you get a ball drilled, do they have “example” balls that you can throw to get the idea of what you are getting?
Any advice will help! Thanks!

Congratulations on your purchase of a Fury! Great investment, and am sure you’ll be happy with it. I’d say that you would be better off with either a semi or relaxed fingertip grip (with thumb slug and finger inserts) instead of a full fingertip, which may be too much for you to handle right now since you want to learn how to hook the ball.
With Brunswick equipment, they all come with a drilling sheet based upon the type of game you have. The driller will assist you with the selection based upon the top weight and pin position your specific ball has. He will ask you what type of lane condition you bowl on, and may have to either roughen up or highly polish the ball coverstock to match.
When you approach a certified level bowling coach or professional bowler with questions, just tell him what you want to do (learn how to hook the ball) and how much experience you have. He or she will watch you bowl and give you advice plus lessons based upon how you deliver the ball.
Hope this helps!
